*:・゚✧*welcome to my magazine archive*・✧*
this project was made for unit 4 information and systems @ GCD CSM, responding to a brief that challenged the traditional LATCH system of organizing objects. i organized my uk-based printed matter collection by sentimental value, combining it with a diary-style format :) enjoy!

this is a documentation of the printed matter i brought with me from Oslo to the UK (aka my most prized possessions, and half-ish of my entire archive)

it is part of a personal system of memory, identity and influence, something i’ve built slowly, piece by piece. i hope it gives you something to think about too <3

My favourite magazines (in most influential order)

DAZED: Atumn issue 2022

this magazine really opened up a world for me. in high school, i often felt unusually passionate about certain niches, especially social ar, and it could feel isolating. in 2022, i woke up to an instagram post showing my favorite ar creator featured in dazed.

i had to get that issue. only one shop in oslo sold dazed, so i kept checking every day for weeks until i finally got it. getting it felt like a validation of my interests and passions, and it sparked my habit of collecting dazed. from norway, it felt like a glimpse into the future of design and pop culture.

RECENS PAPER: Issue 6, Document (2017)

as a kid, i became aware quite early of how adults often underestimated what children were capable of creatively, especially within digital media. online, i had seen kids my age and younger produce digital work at an incredibly high level, and i never understood why sports were taken so much more seriously than these animations. (i mean, both are in motion???)

when the editor-in-chief of this magazine visited my middle school, something clicked. She was young, had grown up through online communities, and was even from east Oslo, just like me! the magazine’s concept of being fully run by kids and young people from around the world made a huge impact. these critical conversations existed online, but hearing someone in Norway, in my own classroom, speak about it felt unreal.

she left a copy behind for the teachers, but I took it (whoops). This magazine sits at the top of my list because it made me feel seen, understood, and taken seriously without any direct interaction. I also ended up applying and entering the high school course she was there to talk about, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!:D

POP MAGAZINE SPECIAL: Atumn winter issue 29 (2013)

this is my favorite issue from a big stack of dazed, pop, and another mags i picked up in a small town in norway while studying tech. i was surprised to find such a huge collection of my favorite magazines there, and it turned out the woman i bought them from was a former fashion photographer.

this issue has kate moss on the cover, but what i love most is how it feels like a worldwide issue. the mix of paper textures, designs, and even languages made me feel like i was traveling through it, and i absolutely love that.

ILFR: Game Over! Fashion & Play, issue 5

in 2022, the editor who visited my school opened the international library of fashion research (ilfr). I had to start collecting them of course!

this is my favorite issue out of the five i own. it explores the overlap between gamified online products and the physical world of luxury, something i think is very interesting.

fun fact: when i studied in southern norway, i couldn’t get a grip of three of these issues. later that year, visiting my family in tokyo, i walked into the first mall and there they were, the three I'd missed, waiting for me on the other side of the world!

Tunica Magazine: Issue nr. 8

tunica magazine was the first experimental style mag i ever bought. after following them online for a year, i went to berlin and found their issue in a mag shop. i couldn’t decide which cover to get, so i bought two, promising myself that the day someone was genuinely interested in the publication, i’d give one away as a thank you. that moment came 2 years later, when i started at csm — a womenswear fashion student was the lucky one!

this issue has been the biggest influence on how i see the experimental styles as a commercial form. it also felt super futuristic, i love it!

Dazed (in most influential order)

i am (self-proclaimed) one of norway’s biggest dazed hobbyist collectors. this is just a fraction of my entire Dazed range. ever since i got my first issue, i’ve been obsessed. every other month, you’d find me running to the only shop in oslo that sold it, daily, for over a week, waiting for the latest drop. From norway, where trends move and arrive way slower than in the UK, Dazed felt like a window into the future of graphic design, music, and pop culture. because of how hard it was to get. it also felt strangely exclusive, despite being one of the most affordable mags in the shop (actually, i take that back, its triple the price than in UK :0). when i moved to the uk and saw dazed everywhere (AND cheaper?!!!!), i was genuinely shocked. its heaven over here!

DAZED: Atumn issue 2022 (archived in 2022)

Please see favorite section for proper description.

these are my   three first magazines i bought in norway after the 2022 issue

DAZED, 30 Years Confused

used my savings on this for my 19th birthday!

These issues were part of the stack i bought from the norwegian fashion photographer. I love them all for different reasons, but it still lacks a bit sentimental value to me.

Artist books / collections (in most influential order)

MURAKAMI EGO by Takashi Murakami

I’m fully Norwegian, but my family history is a bit unexpected: my mums side grew up in Japan before later moving to Norway. This introduced a mix of cultural references into my upbringing, and growing up, Takashi Murakami was of course the biggest one.

Murakami’s ability to sit between seriousness and play, critique and commercial appeal has always facineted me like many others. It somehow makes his practice easy to revisit without needing a fixed interpretation and I love that.
OPPKAST MAGASIN: Frykt og Begjær, issue nr 3.

oppkast (means “vomit” in norwegian) is a volunteer-run magazine with open calls for artists every year, no matter the medium. i love how it keeps me in the loop with what’s emerging in oslo’s next-gen creative and underground scene. i am also super happy that  theres a independant magazine in norway made by youth <33 so coooooool
DAZED, 30 Years Confused

STEVE NAKAMURA, KYARU PAMYU PAMYU ARTWORKS 2011-2013

steve nakamura is the graphic designer and art director behind kyary pamyu pamyu’s brand from the very start. he’s also a gcd graduate from central saint martins!! i love how he works with the contrasts of kawaii and scary to the point it bridges them, super interesting communication work!

COLORFUL - Sebastian Masuda Artwork

sebastian masuda is often called the father of the harajuku movement and was the creative director behind kyary pamyu pamyu’s entire visual world. in 2010, visiting my grandparents in nagoya, i was introduced to japanese pop culture for the first time, including the very unique fashion scene. it was the total opposite of the scandi minimalism i grew up around, and that contrast really stuck with me. to this day i still have a dream of escaping reality and living inside kyary’s world forever xoxo

i bought this in masuda’s dokidoki store in omotesando, tokyo, in 2024.

Intellectual input (in favourite order)
Graphic Design in the post-digital age

International Edition: The infamous first issue

Another concept by the editor that visited my high school! 1 of 500 copies in the world. it folds out to a huge sheet! Really fun articles as well  i love itttt:D
WIRED JP: Spatial Computing
CYBERFEMINISM INDEX, Mindy Seu

this is a huge archive of cyberfeminist art and media spanning more than 30 years, and one of my favourite publications!! i especially love the use of "hyperlinking" within a printed format, translating digital systems into physical design.

What makes this publication particularly interesting to me is how the printed object holds a different systemic value from its online version, despite containing the same information. The shift in medium changes how the archive is accessed, approached and experienced and I could nerd about this for houuuuuuurs

i found it at climax books in soho, a tiny shop where you have to ring a bell to get in, then climb a narrow staircase. when i reached the top, i locked eyes with isabella burley, former editor of dazed magazine, who gave me a sticker i still keep on my laptop today. (surrealllllll)

INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF FASHION RESEARCH @ NATONAL MUSEUM OF NORWAY
Serpentine Gallery: The Call

the first thing i did when i arrived in the UK from norway, was subscribe to dazed club. from that, i got lucky and scored an invite to a launch event for AnOther magazine, all about art, ai, tech, and music. while i there, i suddenly realized i was standing right next to THE. Jefferson Hack — the founder of Dazed! (again VERY surreal situation for a dazed magazine fangirl lol) he was just casually there... on a random monday??????
TYPEONE: Issue 2
ARBYTE GALLERY LEAFLET

visited an exhibition in london at arbyte, a gallery i’ve followed for a long time. the trip there was absolutely worth it!! i think this was my first time entering a digital-first focused gallery too, and i’m still soooooo hyped from the visit!!

Experimental (in favourite order)

TUNICA: Issue9
IDEA:The online state of digital portfolios
International Edition: The Infamous First Issue.
SEIZE: Issue 1

I bought this in Good News soho, when visiting london for the offer holder day at CSM. when i came home to norway, i researched the mag, and discovered it was created by two graduates of CSM GCD!
WETWARE: Issue One

I met the creator of this at a printed matter fair at ILFR in norway. they are based in Netherlands and focuses on digital fashion x academia. Can’t wait to see more from them, they were also super kind to me!

TUNICA: Issue 8
Editorial: Issue 22
Highsnobety: Issue (cant remember will fill in later)

Collectors items (in my opinion?)

RECENS PAPER: Issue 6, Document (2017)

See favourites section for description.
POP MAGAZINE SPECIAL: Atumn winter issue 29 (2013)

ALL-IN: EN VOGUE

all-in studio is such a cool design studio, and one of the designers is norwegian too!! they’re famous for experimenting with print, and i picked up this limited edition at Good News Soho. The pages aren’t bound as they come as a stack of papers, so you kind of have to curate your own magazine and find your own system.

it made me think about the attention economy: instead of telling people how to read or interact, it lets them explore the product until it starts talking back and actually resonates for them. i think this is very effective  one way communication made two way.
SWITCH: Takahashi Undercover

when visiting tokyo, i kept seeing this brand everywhere, Undercover by jun takahashi. they had tons of collabs that caught my eye. i picked up this issue to dig deeper into the brand.

International Library of Fashion Research issue 1-5
International Edition: The Infamous First Issue.

DAMU: Arif at Munch

DAMU is a publication made for the exhibition ARIF at the edvard munch museum in Oslo. Arif is one of norway’s most renowned rappers, and this collaboration was undeniably iconic. definitely a cultural moment.

THE END (FOR NOW) :)))))))
